Australian Gothic™: A Living Design Study
An art and visual research project by Bryton Gore.
A COUNTRY SEEN FROM WITHIN IT.
Australian Gothic™ is a living design study of the visual and psychological conditions that shape my work: landscape, exposure, image, memory, identity and survival under Australian conditions.
It began as a publication around the forces shaping my work. It became a field study of its own environment a way to build a world, test its rules and document what is already here.
01 / SITE
The landscape is evidence
Weatherboards, red earth, winter light, black structures, temporary shelters, heat and distance are not just scenery. They hold traces of how a place is lived in, remembered and survived.
02 / EXPOSURE
What forms under pressure?
The study looks at surfaces changed by prolonged exposure, identities flattened by observation, and environments that become psychological architecture. I’m interested in adaptation: what people and places become under pressure.
03 / IMAGE
Memory, identity and the frame
Images can preserve, distort and expose. Australian Gothic™ explores how landscape and image shape identity and how ordinary spaces, objects and memories acquire symbolic weight.
04 / ARCHIVE
A world still being built
Painting, photography, objects and environments enter an ongoing visual archive. Each work adds evidence to the study; the collection develops as the work exists.
Romantic Brutalism is the broader visual language. Australian Gothic™ is the place-specific study. GORE is the studio that holds both.
